Here's the exciting new goal that has evolved as a result from this past weekend's MEGA Event in L.A. It's big. It's never been done before. But that doesn't mean it can't be done:
I'm going to be responsible for creating 500 new, non-fiction books by the end of the year.
For the next month, I'm going to connect with as many aspiring writers as possible. I want to talk to everyone who has ever had someone say, "You should write a book," or "I wish I was half as good at that as you are," or "I need your help." Everyone who is an expert in something, everyone with a fascinating life story that could touch someone else, and everyone who has always had a secret desire to write a book is my target audience.
Beginning in April (after tax time), I'm going to offer my services as muse and writing coach to the first 500 people who come on board for the ride. I'll take them through the same steps that I use with my clients when we're creating a bestselling book for our publisher. I'll guide them through the entire process of writing a book -- from narrowing down a suitable subject, to devising a working table of contents, to writing the rough draft, to polishing the manuscript. Edited drafts should be ready by December 1 -- leaving 4 extra weeks for final touches if someone falls a bit behind.
I won't guarantee publication. I'm a writer, not a publisher. However, in addition to writing their manuscripts, participants will also learn how to write an unbeatable book proposal for their project. I plan to give them the opportunity to listen in on conversations with (and ask questions of) the owner of a "boutique" New York agency, the managing editor of a prestigious niche publisher, writers who have successfully done P.O.D. books, a successful screenwriter with an e-book, and others who are knowledgeable about various aspects of the publishing industry.
They'll get their instruction via regular audio downloads that they can listen to and act on at their own pace. Guided homework assignments will take them through an easy-to-follow, sequential process that will result in a book manuscript by the end of the year. There will be a Mastermind list posted online, enabling participants to practice their pitches and logs or sell-lines. Once the pitch is perfected, the student's photo, book title, area of expertise, short pitch and contact information will be made available online for agents, editors, and publishers to peruse.
I'll be attending the MEGA Book Marketing University in Orlando in July, and I'll buy dinner for the first 50 of my students who sign up to attend. I'll also make 15 minute one-on-one consults available free of charge for any of my students who go.
There will be a 120 day no risk, unlimited, no questions asked, absolutely no hard feelings, money back guarantee. If, at any time during the first 4 months of the project, students feel that it's not for them -- if they don't like the way I teach, don't like what I have to say, suffer health or family setbacks that make it impossible to keep up, lose interest, or find a publisher for what they've finished and don't need my input any more -- they just let me know, and I'll happily refund their entire tuition.
There's more, but that's the gist of things. :)
I've already begun structuring the modules and working on the content. With no advertising or word-of-mouth yet, I've got my first three students. Whee!
It promises to be a great ride. But because of prior time commitments, combined with planning for this year-long class, the daily blog is going to have to go on hiatus.
A website on the project should be up and running soon. In the meantime, if you're at all interested in joining me on the journey, send me an e-mail and I'll tell you all about it!
500 books! 500 new authors! I can't wait to read what we write!
